The congress will be held in the Beurs van Berlage, right in the heart of Amsterdam. This landmark red brick building was opened in 1903 and is named after its designer Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934), a prominent and influential Dutch architect. It has had a distinguished past, originally as the home of the Amsterdam Stock Exchange until the early 1980s (‘Beurs’ is Stock exchange in Dutch).

This is how it is pronounced in Dutch:

The monumental building has a rich history which is apparent as soon as you step inside. Wandering through the hallways, surrounded by the impressive wood and marble artwork in the walls, the light fall through the windows in the high ceilings you imagine yourself in the 19th Century.

Amsterdam was doing well near the end of the 19th Century. Trade was flourishing and more and more people moved to the city.

The architect, a staunch socialist, did not expect a long life for the stock exchange. Hence, he designed the building in such a way that in the future it could be used as a ‘Palace for the People’ inspired by the Italian ‘Palazzo Pubblico’ principle.

Today, de ‘Beurs van Berlage’ serves as an important location for cultural and societal purposes and has set as a goal to be a 5-star congress- and event venue.
Judging on the fact that our current king Willem Alexander and queen Maxima chose the venue as their civil wedding ceremony location in 2008, it is safe to say ‘the Beurs’ (as we say in Amsterdam) succeeded in their mission.
